Siena is a medieval city. At the time there were horses with carriages and no cars. It’s not a mystery that the window in the breakfast room overlooks Vicolo delle Carrozze. The translation for carrozze is carriages: this is the location where people would park their “cars” at the time. Siena has to cope with tourism and cars but if you follow our instructions on how to arrive here at Il Battistero Siena, it should be hassle-free. In order to arrive here, the best way is to arrive at Porta San Marco which can be easily found using a GPS system. Once you arrive at the medieval gate (Porta San Marco) you have to go past the gate and turn left (Via del Nuovo Asilo). After a while you will pass a traffic light, go straight on and at the end of the street turn right into Via Paolo Mascagni. Go straight on, you will see a ZTL warning, signaling a limited traffic zone. You go straight past the cameras going straight and at the end it will open up into a small square (Piazzetta delle Due Porte). You will see a narrow passage on the left and you need to take that road (Via Fosso di Sant’Ansano). Then you will pass a square (Piazzetta della Selva), go on into Via Franciosa and at the end you will see piazza San Giovanni. Here you can park temporally so as to drop off your baggage.
The best way to get here if you are coming by foot is by following the Torre del Mangia, or the bell tower. When you get there you will be just one hundred meters from Il Battistero Siena.
